Liberal MP Tim Wilson has proposed to his partner Ryan Bolger in the House of Representatives, during an emotional speech in parliament today.

Mr Wilson has been engaged to the school teacher for nine years, who was present in the chamber for the proposal and said “yes”.

It comes shortly after the same-sex marriage bill was introduced to the Lower House.

An emotional Mr Wilson said the same-sex marriage debate had been “the soundtrack to their relationship”.

3AW Mornings Neil Mitchell said the speech was “a silly stunt”.

“I don’t think you use the floor of the parliament for stunts like that,” Neil said.

“Good luck to them, he’s entitled to do it, but perhaps it takes a bit away from the real issue here.”
