Much loved Melbourne Zoo elephant dies
Bong Su the elephant has died after a long battle with arthritis.
It’s been 40 years since Melbourne Zoo’s beloved bull elephant (pictured above) arrived from a refuge in Malaysia.
The heart-rending decision was made to end the Asian elephant’s suffering after receiving pain relief, massages and other therapies since 2005.
Bong Su sired five calves, four at Melbourne Zoo and one at Taronga Zoo in Sydney.
Counselling has been offered to elephant keepers and zoo staff.
