Muslim leaders split over Geert Wilders’ entry into Australia
Muslim leaders are divided over whether anti-Islamic Dutch MP Geert Wilders should be allowed into Australia.
Lebanese Muslim Association Samier Dandan has asked Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to cancel Mr Wilders’ visa, who has several controversial opinions about Islamic immigration.
Silma Ihram, president of the Australian Muslim Women’s Association, also believes he should not be allowed into the country.
She said it would only inflame an already tense situation.
‘If we want to have an informed debate ? that’s fine ? but right now is an appalling time to bring someone into this terribly tense situation,’ Ms Ihram said.
She said it would counter-productive.
But Kuranda Seyit, spokesperson for the Islamic Council of Victoria, disagreed.
‘Freedom of speech is one of the most important aspects of our society,’ he said.
