Neighbour smashes window to save woman trapped in Prahran apartment fire

A group of neighbours have smashed a window with an umbrella stand to save a woman trapped inside her burning apartment.

James told Ross and John he woke to an alarm in his Prahran street this morning.

He went outside to find an apartment across the road was on fire.

“There was a lady in the apartment, she was calling for help but she couldn’t see anything, there was too much smoke,” he said.

“The door was locked and there was too many flames.

“We threw an umbrella stand through the window.”

The woman avoided serious injury.

Fire crews were able to contain the blaze to one unit.
