Neil Mitchell has defended Sam Newman amid criticism he is a ‘harassing bully’.

Newman is under fire for comments directed at co-host of The Footy Show, Rebecca Maddern. 

Today, teacher Christopher Bantick wrote in the Herald Sun that Newman is ‘irrelevant’ and a ‘harassing bully’.

But Neil said that criticism goes too far.

He said Sam Newman’s public character is an act that people shouldn’t take seriously.

‘He is a clown, an act, a performer,’ Neil said.

‘Sam Newman is not a bully, he is nothing like it. You can criticise his jokes and his act, but he is no bully.

‘When did we get so serious?’
