Neil Mitchell says a royal commission report on veteran suicides has revealed “mass hypocrisy”.
The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide’s interim report, handed down on Thursday, found a serious backlog in the system.
A staggering 42,000 veterans were awaiting processing at the end of May, a deeply concerning situation which a royal commission says may lead to suicides.
Since 2001, there have been 1273 suicides by veterans, far more than the number killed on combat over the same period.
Neil Mitchell says the report is “confirmation of mass hypocrisy”.
“All of us carry some of it because we haven’t stamped our feet loudly enough about this,” the 3AW Mornings host said.
“‘We bemourn and stand there with our hand on our heart and say we owe these people a deep debt and deep gratitude, and we do, and then treat them like dirt. This will cost a lot of money, but it’s got to be fixed, and we have to insist it is fixed.”
