Neil Mitchell has farewelled “one of the best men” he’s ever met.

Corporal Alexander Cyril Arthurson — known as ‘Lex’ — died at the age of 101 on Wednesday.

He served in Malaya, Singapore and Thailand in the Second World War, and spent three and a half years in Changi Prison and on the Burma-Thailand railway after being made a prisoner of war in 1942.

Neil travelled to Changi with him in 2005.

“He’s the sort of bloke we like to think the country is built on. His name should be remembered, should be honoured,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

“His story should be told because he’s an inspiration.

“If we could bottle whatever made Lex Arthurson this world wouldn’t have any problems.”
