Neil Mitchell admits he was “shocked” to learn of Lisa Wilkinson’s sudden departure from The Today Show.

But he says her gender is irrelevant in the matter and that suggestions she’s “made a stand for feminism” are misguided.

It’s been reported Wilkinson left Channel 9 because the network would not pay her the same as her co-host Karl Stefanovic.

“There aren’t many shocks in television these days – this was a shock,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

“But it’s being interpreted as a stand for equal pay.

“I find that very hard to believe.

“I don’t think gender matters all that much in the television world.

“Only two things matter – the two Rs – ratings and revenue.

“I think Lisa Wilkinson is a superb performer.

“I’ve worked with her and Karl for many years and I think she is an excellent presenter and interviewer and I don’t know why she’s leaving, but in television only two things matter – ratings and revenue.”

He spoke with Tracey Spicer about the issue, who held a very different view.

“I think she wanted to make a statement on behalf of all women,” she said.
