The tense situation surrounding the overseas arrest of Tara Brown and her 60 Minutes crew should act as a ‘wake-up call’ for current affairs television, says Neil Mitchell.

The 3AW Mornings host said 60 Minutes wasn’t alone in its often line-pushing approach to get stories, but the arrest of its crew showed sometimes they went too far.

‘This is a real wake-up call for current affairs television,’ Neil Mitchell said on Monday.

‘They have to stop playing with people’s lives – they all do it.

‘But current affairs tv can be brutal, heartless, exploitive and manipulative.

‘Sometimes it professes to care for people, while exploiting them.

‘As I said, they all do it.’
