Neil Mitchell: Scott Morrison was ‘shouted down too quickly’ over forklift idea

On Thursday morning, Scott Morrison proposed allowing under-18s to drive forklifts to ease stress on the national supply chain.
But, after coming under fire on social media, and failing to win the support of the states, he’s abandoned the idea later the same day.
Neil Mitchell says the Prime Minister “was shouted down too quickly”.
“I think that’s a very city-centric reaction. If you think about country areas, kids are driving tractors from about 14,” the 3AW Mornings host said.
“In New Zealand you get a forklift licence at 15 years old.
“In Germany, and they’re obsessive about safety in Germany, you get a forklift licence at 16.
“Now obviously you need training, you need supervision, so it wasn’t an absurd suggestion from the Prime Minister.”

CEO of the Victorian Transport Association, Peter Anderson, agrees.
“If you just took it at face value, I can understand why people would want to criticise it, but if you actually work your way into the depth of it in terms of ensuring individuals are trained, ensuring they’ve got the attitude correct in the application of our skills, then they are welcome in our workforce,” Mr Anderson told Neil Mitchell.
