Neil Mitchell: The promise Daniel Andrews broke a third time yesterday

Tom Elliott

Before the election, Daniel Andrews was unequivocal: No new or increased taxes.

‘I make that promise, Peter, to every single Victorian,’ Mr Andrews told Channel 7 newsreader Peter Mitchell.

Neil Mitchell: Well, today every single Victorian can feel dudded.

The government has in recent times announced:

  • An increase of about one-third to stamp duty on cars (Saturday)
  • Changes to stamp duty on some house sales
  • The new Uber levy

‘This will cost us money,’ Neil Mitchell said, challenging treasurer Tim Pallas and Mr Andrews to tell us the changes were ‘cost neutral’.

But Mr Andrews insists it’s not a broken promise.

‘None of the commitments we made were dependant on tax increases,’ he said.

‘We’ve delivered on each and every commitment we’ve made.’
