Neil Mitchell tip-off: Government to expand prison precinct

The Andrews Government plans to double the size of the jail precinct at Lara to deal with Victoria’s booming prison population.

Neil Mitchell exclusively revealed the new jail will be built at Lara, and house up to 900 beds, which would make it among Victoria’s biggest prison’s.

Later today, the government issued a press release confirming plans to purchase land to expand the Lara precinct with a new maximum security precinct.

The Government hasn’t yet detailed the cost to taxpayers or exactly where or when it will be built.

Corrections Minister Gayle Tierney says more will be disclosed in the state budget in a few months.
