Neil Mitchell has laughed off Donald Trump’s “embarrassing” excuse for a gaffe, saying Russian leader Vladimir Putin “played him like a violin”.

The US president sparked outrage after saying he couldn’t see any reason why Russia “would” have meddled in the 2016 presidential election.

He’s since said it was “obvious” he meant to say “wouldn’t”.

“Haha c’mon, does anybody actually cop that?” Neil Mitchell said on Wednesday.

“It’s massively dishonest.”

The 3AW Mornings host said Trump acted like a “lap dog”.

“Putin played him like a violin and Trump is trying to lie his way out of it,” Neil Mitchell said.

“I’m not surprised.

“Trump is cunning, but Putin – several people who’ve dealt with his regime have told me this – is one of the toughest and smartest operators in the world.

“He’s a brutal dictator – his regime has killed Australian citizens, Australian civilians.

“He is a bad man, but he is a smart man and is smarter than Donald Trump by a long way.

“I think this will undermine even the most solid of Trump’s supporters.”
