A new advertising campaign aimed at preventing family violence at a grassroots level will be rolled out across the country this week.

The campaign, Stop it at the Start, was launched today as part of the second phase of the Federal Government’s family violence campaign.

Federal Minister for Women, Kelly O’Dwyer,  spoke to Tom Elliott about it this afternoon.

The campaign takes aim at throwaway lines like  ‘it’s just boys being boys’ or ‘he did it because he likes you’.

“This particular campaign is focussed on the fact that there is a link between disrespect and violence,” she said.

“All violence, and the cycle of it starts with disrespect.

“The message in these ads is to say, should we sometimes challenge ourselves, and ask the question, are we teaching our children disrespect? Are the hearing a message different than the one we expected.”

Tom Elliott: I would prefer a program that just says, don’t be violent to each other. Just don’t do it.
