New calls for the Taxi industry to introduce surge pricing during peak times

Uber’s newest high profile supporter has called for the Taxi industry to introduce surge pricing.

Neil Mitchell spoke with Professor Allan Fels, who chaired the Taxi Industry Inquiry.

Allan believes a lot of restrictions currently on taxis need to be removed so they can compete.

He’s told Neil he’d remove restrictions on prices – ‘Why aren’t taxi’s allowed to cut their prices?’ 

‘Why can’t they do so called ‘surge’ pricing’ –  ‘When demand is high, prices go up and when demand is down, prices go down’

Neil also announced that a new Uber system named ‘Uber Pool’ is coming to Melbourne.
