New cut-price supermarket to open in Melbourne

Tom Elliott

A new cut-price supermarket will officially open in Melbourne’s north-west tomorrow.

IGA-operated Supa Valu is opening its first Victorian store in Delahey. It comes after the opening of two other stores: one in NSW and one in Queensland.

Owner and managing director, Neal Morgan, says the supermarket is the “real deal”.

“I’d say it’s probably halfway between an Aldi and a Costco model,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“Aldi doesn’t have the level of fresh food we have. We have butchers on site and we bake our own bread.”

Supa Valu has a reduced range of products, stocking “about half” of the number of items a traditional IGA store would have.
