New report reveals big increase in imprisonment rates for serious offences
Almost half of Victoria’s prison population is made up of accused offenders who’ve yet to be sentenced and refused bail.
It comes on the back of a new report from the Sentencing Advisory Council which revealed a big increase in imprisonment rates for serious offences.
Chair of the council, Professor Arie Freiberg, told Neil Mitchell 44 per cent of Victoria’s prison population was made up of unsentenced people.
“I doubt it’s making us safer, but it’s certainly making the correctional system more expensive,” he said.
