The game of golf will launch into 2019 with a series of new rules designed to speed up the game.

More relaxed rules around bunkers and tighter restrictions on lost balls are among the new measures that the sport’s top bodies have endorsed in a bid to make the game more attractive to a new generation of players.

Some of the more significant measures include:

  • No penalty for hitting the hole flag when you choose to leave it in
  • Ball drops are to be done from knee height, not shoulder height
  • Golfers have only three minutes — not five — to find a lost ball
  • No penalty for a ‘double hit’ mid-stroke
