Police Minister Lisa Neville has admitted Victoria has something to learn from New South Wales as Melbourne comes to grips with a surge in crime.

Neil Mitchell pressed the minister on why New South Wales is ‘doing far better than us’.

‘I think it’s a problem. That’s why they are doing far better than us in terms of operational police numbers,’ she said.

‘I think there is a number of factors operating here.

‘They have a number of different laws than we do which is what we are also changing, for example access to DNA.

‘We are going to change the laws to make us in line with New South Wales.’
