Victoria’s new Road Safety Camera Commissioner has addressed concerns the system won’t be able to cope with the extra workload new mobile phone cameras will generate from next year.

The cameras, which detect drivers who are using their phones will driving, flooded NSW’s system when they were trialed in 2020.

More than 43,000 fines were issued in just four months.

The new cameras generated $19 million in revenue in that time.

Neil Mitchell said it was logical to expect Victorian drivers to challenge the fines and complain when they’re issued here.

“We’ll let that play out, Neil, and I’ll do my work as best I can,” Road Safety Camera Commissioner Neville Taylor said on 3AW Mornings.

“I suspect you’re right.

“Any time new technology comes out, cautiously rolled out, we are going to see people’s views aired and complaints.

“But at the the same time, we know from some reviews done five years ago, and two years ago, there is an increasing trend of people understanding and accepting confidence in the value of road safety cameras.”
