Early elective induction reduces the likelihood of perineal injury in women and results in better outcomes for babies, according to new research.

A Melbourne University study examined data from more than 1.6 million women and found the risk of serious perineal injury was reduced by 37 per cent when women were induced at 39 weeks rather than waiting for spontaneous labour at 40 weeks or later.

Perinatal epidemiologist at the University of Melbourne, Dr Roxanne Hastie, who led the study, said 39-week induction also resulted in “reduced likelihood to go to the intensive care unit” for babies.
