New study says swearing makes you strong and more resistant to pain

Ross and Russel

Swearing makes you stronger and better able to handle pain, at least that’s the finding of researchers in the UK.

The reason behind the phenomenon isn’t known, but there’s a theory swearing may stimulate the flight-or-fight instinct.

Dr Richard Stephens, lead researcher from Keele University, has told 3AW Breakfast two groups were put to an extreme test on an exercise bike, riding as fast as they could at full speed.

‘Then they drop a huge amount of resistance onto the wheels of the bike and for 30 seconds it’s hell,’ Dr Stephens told Justin and Craig.

‘The people on one occasion repeated a swear word and on another occasion they repeated a neutral word.

‘They performed better when they used the swear word.’
