New Federal Treasurer and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party Josh Frydenberg says he has spoken with former PM Tony Abbott and would like to see him play a larger role in the Morrison government.

Frydenberg told Neil Mitchell he and Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke with Tony Abbott yesterday.

“I had a chat with Tony Abbott, he’s certainly got political skills and to have him play a role in the Morrison government I think would be of benefit,” he said.

“There is discussion around a role in the Indigenous affairs area and it’s something that Tony’s been passionate about for a long period of time, I do think he has something to bring to the table.”

He also dismissed today’s Newspoll results, which has the Liberals at just 44 to Labor’s 56.

“The poll today is as big a surprise as the sun coming up tomorrow,” he said.

“The last week was a very difficult week for the party and we need to move on.

“It reduces the public’s confidence in the system and that’s in no one’s interests.”
