A select group of 1000 commuters will be using an Android smartphone app instead of a Myki card as part of a trial for new ticketing technology.

It’s part of a six month trial, which will allow people to touch on and off, top up their card, and check their balance via their phone.

Public Transport Victoria CEO Jeroen Weimar says those involved are part of an industry-based test group.

“Looking at different ways in which we can extend Myki and make it easier for people to use our trains, trams and buses,” he told Tom Elliott.

“We’ll be using your phone to mimic a Myki card.”

He said the technology is available on Android, but not Apple phones, yet.
