A new non-competitive style of sport is aiming to keep more young people in sport.

Victoria University is developing the Sport4Me program, offering more flexible, relaxed sporting activities in a bid to stem the mass exodus of young people from physical activity.

Professor of sport participation at Victoria University, Rochelle Eime, says there’s “nothing wrong with competition” but it doesn’t suit all children and teens.

“We see a big drop-off in adolescence,” she told Jacqui Felgate and Jimmy Bartel, filling in for Ross and Russel.

“Sometimes that product doesn’t suit them and we really don’t have much else for them except that traditional inter-club competitive model.”
