The Port of Melbourne has been sold to a consortium in a 50-year lease worth $9.7 billion.

The figure is significantly higher than had been expected, and leaves the State government in a good financial position.

This has led Nick McCallum to ask: what should the money be spent on?

Nick believes part should be spent to help put a roof over the head of the 32,000 people on waiting lists for public housing.

3AW listeners offered up their own suggestions, including fixing existing roads, reducing debt, and connecting the Eastern freeway to the Ring road.
