An award-winning journalist from The Age has explained the story behind a six-month investigation which has exposed alleged corruption in the oil industry.

Nick McKenzie says he and his colleagues teamed up with journalists from the Huffington Post and obtained hundreds of thousands of emails and documents from Unaoil run by the Monaco-based Asahni clan.

The information appears to implicate dozens of leading companies, bureaucrats and politicians in a sophisticated global web of bribery.

McKenzie said he initially got an anonymous letter telling him to place a coded ad in a French newspaper.

He told Ross and John it was like something out of a spy novel.
