Neil Mitchell has gone into bat for Nick Riewoldt after the St Kilda captain was forced to apologise for an outburst following Sunday’s win over Essendon.

Riewoldt clashed with marketing and operations manager Kelley Musster when she asked him to fulfil his post-match duties, which included taking ‘selfies’ with fans.

The champion forward snapped and was understood to be far from happy with the Saints’ performance, despite a 46-point victory.

It’s understood Riewoldt’s apology has been accepted.

3AW Mornings host Neil Mitchell described Riewoldt as a ‘decent man’ who had been ‘publicly embarrassed’ for simply showing he cared.

‘You tend to react that way when you care about what you do and put everything into it,’ Neil Mitchell said.

‘He’s apologised, good on him for that, but why is this even an issue?

‘Is it relevant that it was a female?

‘There’s a suggestion the fact Riewoldt clashed with a female staff member is somehow relevant to the club’s bid to get a womens’ team?

‘C’mon, this is sooky. Far, far too sooky.’

3AW Football commentator Nathan Brown is a friend of Riewoldt’s and said he’d undoubtedly be embarrassed about what had transpired.

‘He had a bad moment and he’d be the first to admit that,’ Brown said.

But Brown said Riewoldt’s character couldn’t be questioned.
