No decision made yet on Chris Gayle’s future in Big Bash League

The head of the Big Bash League Anthony Everard says a decision on whether hard-hitting West Indian batsman Chris Gayle has a future in the competition will be made in coming months.

Gayle’s stint with the Melbourne Renegades was embroiled in controversy after his sideline interview with television reporter Mel McLaughlin down in Hobart in early January.

He was fined $10,000 by the Renegades and Cricket Australia is weighing up whether or not the 36-year-old will be welcome to return for BBL06.

When asked by Macquarie Radio’s Darren Berry is Gayle would be welcome back, Everard replied: ‘We haven’t a formed a view on that at the moment.

‘Chris is out of contract at the moment and, as far as we’re aware, no teams are advanced at any stage in their discussions with him.

‘Chris is a great entertainer, that’s never been in question. In some respects that’s why we were so disappointed (at his actions) because he has so much to offer this competition.’

Everard also touched on the future of the competition and the possibility of restructuring the finals series after the Adelaide Strikers became the fourth consecutive minor premier to be bundled out of the title race after losing their semi-final.
