A children’s play area in regional Victoria was gutted by fire on Sunday morning.

The Railway Reserve playground in Yea is now closed to the public, with approximately $250,000 required to rebuild the popular local outdoor play area.

Murrindindi Shire Council CEO Craig Lloyd told Tim Elliott police were treating the incident as suspicious.

“It’s too early to say whether (the fire was deliberately lit) but certainly police are following up on some leads” he said.

“There’s basic insurance is place but the amount we’ll get back will go nowhere near replacing what was there.

“The (playground) is located in a pretty difficult spot for it to be an accident.”

Police confirm they’re investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire, with the blaze destroying equipment before being extinguished by the CFA early Sunday morning.
