November 2017 winner – Neu Mode Design & Construction

Article image for November 2017 winner – Neu Mode Design & Construction

We are pleased to advise winner of 3AW/Momentum Energy Small Business Success Awards for November 2017 is Neu Mode Design & Construction

Michael Hill began his business as a sole carpenter in the mid-1990’s – building during the day and being a pseudo-accountant at night; like many small businesses. The business began to grow and he employed some carpenters to assist. In 2003, in the midst of a couple of home renovations, Michael had an accident and broke his neck which rendered him a quadriplegic. I credits his family (wife and young son) and his business with giving him motivation and inspiration to maintain his company and stay focused on the rehabilitation he needed. At the beginning of the 6 months hospital based rehab, he asked for his laptop, had a finger splint made and got on with work to ensure the renovation jobs were finished.

While remaining a small business, Michael now employs 6 permanent staff with a group of loyal sub- contractors. Neu Mode Design & Construction deals mainly with residential renovations and new homes from design and cost planning through to a completed home.

Significantly, Neu Mode Design & Construction have won a number of MBAV (Master Builders Association of Victoria) awards in Building Excellence and last year won Renovation/Addition Project of the Year with the HIA (Housing Industry Association).

It is frustrating Michael can no longer be ‘on the tools’ which he loved, but he has great and dedicated people around him. Michael’s focus now in the business is to attract new clients, work on design costing, work with architects and then see the build through to completion with satisfied clients. His team makes sure he can get access to see each site so he can continue to oversee all projects.

With nearly 30 years’ experience in the building industry and a combined experience within the business of over 100 years, Neu Mode provides superior quality building services which meet the clients’ design and budget brief.

Neu Mode has just employed a qualified Interior Decorator to assist them and their clients with the aesthetics of the living spaces they are building. Colours and textures are very important but also subjective. Their decorator guides clients with ideas to meet their desires.

Neu Mode Design & Construction Interior Decorator also holds a Bachelor in Occupational Therapy so along with Michael’s experience in living in a wheelchair; the company would like Neumode to expand in the area of design for people living with a disability. Neu Mode Design & Construction are passionate about educating people and other designers and architects that a living space can easily be designed to meet a person’s individual physical and cognitive needs without needing to look clinical.

In a general sense, Neu Mode aims to continue its growth in the residential building market, providing exceptional quality design and building work.

Our reason for selecting Neu Mode is in recognition of how the business owners have created a multi award winning business in spite of extreme adversity and how they actively advocate and educate peers on how living spaces can easily be designed to meet individual physical and cognitive needs without needing to look clinical.
