New statistics show Victorian workers are more likely to die in the next few weeks before Christmas than any other time of the year.

In this week alone, one man has died while at least four others have been seriously injured at work including a tow truck driver on Peninsula Link.

Marnie Williams, Victoria’s Executive Director of Health and Safety at Worksafe, told Ross and John it’s the most dangerous time of year to be at work.

She said in the last week, two young construction workers have suffered serious injuries in falls at work.

“November and December are the two most dangerous months of the year for Victorian workplaces,” she said.

“It’s a sad fact that more Victorians die in the lead up to Christmas than at any other time of year.

“With Christmas just around the corner we’ve got employers and workers rushing to meet deadlines and unfortunately sometimes taking shortcuts and rushing.”
