‘Now is not the time’ to ease mask rules, warns epidemiologist

3aw breakfast

One of Australia’s most prominent epidemiologists is urging the Victorian government to hold off on easing mask rules until the New Year.

And the emergence of a possible Omicron spreading event at two Melbourne bars last week has only added to her concern.

Nancy Baxter, epidemiologist and head of the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health at Melbourne University, told 3AW Breakfast now was not the time to ease mask rules.

“I have been very clear,” she said.

“Masks are one of the least restrictive, and best, ways to protect ourselves and each other.

“I don’t think now is the time to relax masks, there is a lot of mixing and mingling at Christmas and parties and such that are going to lead to an increase in cases.

“Now you add Omicron.

“Let’s relax masks in January.

“Now is not the time.”
