One of Melbourne’s oldest pubs could be partially demolished

One of Melbourne’s oldest pubs could be turned into an apartment complex.

Developers have submitted plans to the City of Melbourne to demolish part of the 157-year-old Royal Standard Hotel on William Street and replace it with five apartments spread over four storeys, plus a restaurant and basement parking.

The pub, built in 1865, is recognised as a significant heritage place within the City of Melbourne’s heritage overlay.

According to the developer’s plan, the facade would be “retained and renewed’, a rear addition to the pub would be demolished and the roof and chimney would be removed and reinstated following construction of a basement level.
