Only half of the international student cohort at the University of Melbourne have made their way back on campus for the start of semester.

It’s expected that number will rise, but Chinese students, who make up 60 per cent of university’s international student population, remain off-shore.

Professor Michael Wesley, deputy vice chancellor international at The University of Melbourne, says it’s hoped that will change.

“As our Omicron infection rates go down, we’re hoping that the Chinese government will start to allow more flights to and from Australia,” he said on 3AW Mornings.

“We’re also hoping that other factors such as concern about Australia’s Omicron rate starts to reduce in China.

“We think those are the two really major factors stopping students coming this way.”
