Opposition leader calls for a crackdown on forced marriages
Opposition leader Matthew Guy has called for a crackdown on forced marriages.
Data obtained under Freedom of Information reveals a forced marriage occurs in Victoria roughly every two weeks.
Mr Guy told Tom Elliott the issue involves both children being forced into marriage and women getting married against her will.
“This is an issue we need to stamp out,” Mr Guy said in the 3AW studio.
“We need to look at sentencing reform. We need to look at making procurement of a forced marriage an offence.
“We should not be tolerating this in Australia.”
