A simmering debate between an elite private school and the City of Yarra over a fence has turned personal, with one family member of the Mayor targeted on social media.

The gated fence on Old Heidelberg Road leading to the Darebin Creek behind Alphington Grammar is at the centre of a community dispute.

Mayor Stephen Jolly pleaded with the school community not to implicate family members in the debate.

“What really upset me … my daughter woke up this morning to people from the school community commenting on (social media posts) of my grandkids,” he told Jacqui Felgate.

“It’s outrageous.”
