Parents encouraged to read 1000 books to their children before they begin school
A new campaign has been launched encouraging parents to read 1000 books to their child from birth until they begin school.
State Library CEO Kate Torney tells Ross and John an early introduction to reading helps improve literacy skills.
She says by fostering a love of reading from a young age, children will be better prepared when they start school.
We know that children that do start school a little bit behind find it really hard to catch up.
I think we’ve focused a lot on literacies for school aged children but haven’t focused a lot on building literacy skills before kids start school.
