A bin fire at an aged care facility in Melbourne’s inner north-west has left a resident and a staff member in hospital.

The blaze started in a bin in a loading dock, sending a significant amount of smoke into the aged care facility on Cade Way in Parkville around 12.30am.

About 45 residents were evacuated from the multi-level building.

Police say one aged care resident and a staff member have been taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.

It took some time for the smoke to clear from the building, with fire crews eventually declaring the incident under control shortly before 3.30am.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
