Parkville Youth Detention Centre set to be demolished
The notorious Parkville Youth Detention Centre is set to be knocked down to make way for more inner-city apartments.?
The facility will be reportedly be demolished and the state government is planning to put the prime land on the market.
The Herald Sun newspaper reports the block could house medium-rise towers of more than 10 storeys.
The sale is expected to generate a $100 million windfall for the government and would help foot the bill for a new, larger youth facility.
The Parkville centre was built in the early 1990s, with inmates trashing the building during a number of riots over the past few months.
The government has flagged the possibility of building a new youth prison at Werribee South.
