‘Particular place in hell’: New proposed sentences targeting war memorial vandals

The trend of memorials and statues being vandalised has prompted proposed harsh penalties to protect sacred sites in Victoria.

With the suggested policy from the Coalition, those who deface or vandalise a war memorial would impose a maximum 10 year jail sentence alongside a fine.

Speaking with Tom Elliott, Shadow Minister for Finance, Bridget Vallence, said that the purpose of these laws are to protect sacred war memorial sites and penalise vandals.

“We will not tolerate vandalism of these sacred sites, I mean, it’s the legacy of our Australian servicemen and women they have sacrificed voluntarily, gone to war. Even still today”, Vallance said.

Penalties similar to this are already in operation in New South Wales and Tasmania with varying degrees of success.
