Multiple callers to 3AW Drive have detailed how they had to jump off a light plane at Melbourne Airport.

A Rex flight bound for King Island was evacuated at around 1:45pm on Tuesday afternoon due to engine problems.

Some passengers were assisted by security, others had to make the 1.5 metre leap onto the tarmac themselves.

It’s believed there were around 43 people on board.

Listener Pamela told Tony Jones no stairs came for the evacuation.

“There were a couple of guys that when we jumped off they sort of held on to us,” she said on 3AW Drive.

Another passenger, Reg, told Tony Jones he was also injured when he disembarked.

“When I jumped out, I’ve got an artificial knee, and hurt that when I hit the ground,” he said

“That’s about all, and I scrapped a bit of skin off the elbow.”

Aviation expert Brian Wilson says there will be a full investigation into the incident.

“It is a very, very serious matter,” he said on 3AW Drive.

“So it’s an immediate reportable event, it’s also immediately reportable because somebody was injured.

“So there will be a full investigation, and that will be handled through the authorities, including CASA.”
