‘People are in fear’: Premier Daniel Andrews commits to tackling growing crime rates

Tom Elliott

Premier Daniel Andrews says a sense of ‘fear and unease’ in the community is real as authorities scramble to tackle Victoria’s crime rate.

Residents in Caroline Springs and Hillside are conducting private street patrols amid growing fear of home invasions and car jackings.

Figures show a marginal increase in police numbers in the last 18 months but the Premier has told Neil Mitchell more than 1000 recruits will go through the academy over next 12 months.

‘We need to get across this,’ he said.

‘My job is to give him [Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton] the resources and indeed the powers as well.

‘People are in fear, that’s a real thing. We need to address this.’
