Physiotherapists are issuing warnings about an exercise which has become more popular with gym-goers over the last decade, due to its growing prevalence online.

Deadlifts, which gained their name when soldiers would pick up the slain in Roman times, were once the domain of serious weightlifters, but now more and more people are giving them a go.

Physiotherapist David Hall warns “for most people they’re not appropriate”, and they can be one of the most dangerous exercises performed in the gym.

“You question for most people whether they need to have that type of lift in their program,” he told Ross and Russel.

“Professional athletes that are well trained in how to do it can certainly do them successfully, but most of us need to tread with caution.”
