Cory Bernardi calls for an end to the luxury car tax
Conservative Senator Cory Bernardi wants to do away with the Luxury Car Tax.
The Senator told Tom Elliott there is no justification for it.
“The government is addicted to taxpayers’ money,” Mr Bernardi said.
Mr Bernardi said luxury cars are often more environmentally-friendly, and therefore should be incentivised rather than discouraged.
“These tariffs apply to a lot of European cars which have much lower emissions,” he said.
“In effect, the government is preventing people from being able to afford vehicles that may make a positive contribution to the environment.”
Currently, cars are subject to a 33% tariff for every dollar over $64,000. The LCT brings in around $1 billion in tax revenue per year.
Tom said the tax is “nonsensical”.
