Federal government strips Yarra City Council of its right to hold citizenship ceremonies
The Turnbull Government has moved quickly to condemn the actions of Yarra City Council, after it voted to no longer recognise Australia Day.
The federal government has stripped the council of its power to hold any citizenship ceremonies and will cut the council’s federal funding.
Canberra correspondent Michael Pachi explained the changes to Tom Elliott.
“The Prime Minister condemned this move by Yarra council,” Michael said.
Any citizenship ceremony in Yarra will now be conducted wholly by a body of the federal government.
