Greens leader clashes with Tom Elliott over plan for rent control
The Greens are advocating rent control in Victoria.
That is, a cap on what rent landlords are allowed to charge on a property and how much they can increase it.
Victorian Greens leader Samantha Ratnam told Tom Elliott it’s important given the inaccessibility of home ownership.
“We need some sort of regulation to ensure that renters aren’t priced out of the only housing option they often have,” she said.
Ms Ratnam said the unregulated “market” has failed to create affordable housing.
But Tom agreed that housing affordability is a significant issue, but doesn’t think rent control is the solution.
