Ideas Factory: Exploring the link between food and mood

NEIL MITCHELL'S IDEAS FACTORY

The link between food and mood is a growing area of research.

Felice Jacka from Deakin University told Neil Mitchell a person’s diet is comparable to a car’s petrol – the higher the quality, the better the performance.

Prof Jacka said there is now a “robust evidence base” linking the quality of diet with a person’s risk of depression and anxiety.

“This link is quite independent of things like income, education, weight, and exercise,” Prof Jacka said.

Prof Jacka said their research shows a “very clear” relationship between diet and the area of the brain responsible for learning and memory.

She also recommended eating three or four small portions of non-processed red meat per week.
