Prisoners may dodge road fines under new scheme

Ross and Russel

Victorian prisoners will be able to ask a magistrate to wipe out their road fines under a new scheme to be introduced by the Department of Justice.

The scheme will allow magistrates to erase fines for traffic offences, outstanding toll fees, and public transport violations.

Professor Arie Freiberg, Chair of the Sentencing Advisory Council told Ross and John that the proposal will improve the rehabilitation prospects of prisoners.

“If you leave jail without outstanding fines you might be able to get on with your life,” he said.
