Snake expert explains why leaving snakes alone is best – even at home

NEIL MITCHELL

A snake expert wants Aussies to leave snakes alone – even at home.

Peter Mirtschin, co-author of Australia’s Dangerous Snakes: Identification, Biology and Envenoming, told Neil Mitchell a snake that lives near you knows you better than you know them.

It sounds risky, but leaving it alone is the best of all the options.

Attempting to kill it is dangerous, and moving it to another location only brings in a stranger.

“If you take the snake away, eventually another one moves in,” he said.

“It doesn’t know you as well. If you get close to it, it’s more likely to bite you.”
